Career Outlook

The United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, studies career trends for a variety of career paths.  Here's what they uncovered about the career outlook for K-12 teachers:

  • The career outlook for K-12 teachers is average to above average.
  • Currently the department of labor is expecting growth in the teaching fields to be around 12% from 2006 to 2016.
  • There will be a lot of job opportunities opening over the next few years as veteran teachers retire and their positions need to be filled.
  • More than 450,000 new teaching positions will be created over the next ten years.
  • The states of Nevada, Arizona, Texas, and Georgia are expected to experience the most growth.
  • The federal government has increased government spending to areas in need of more teachers.
  • More states are initiating full-day kindergarten and universal preschool programs meaning more teachers will be needed in those areas.
  • Job prospects will be higher in urban and rural districts than in suburban districts.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the hottest job areas in Education are likely to be:

  • Math
  • Science
  • Special Education
  • Bilingual Education
  • Foreign Languages

And, the factors effecting the teaching profession for the next decade or so are likely to include the following:

  • The influx of minority students coupled with a shortage of minority teachers might signal a need for more minority teachers.
  • Rising enrollment for non-English-speaking students might signal a need for bilingual teachers.
  • The need for vocational teachers is likely to increase.

So, what makes teaching such a hot field?  Americans are serious about the need to revamp their educational system.  Parents, educators, and the government are all working together to make this country's educational opportunities the best in the world.  All of this, combined with better pay, more control over policy-making, and more interest in public education work together to make teaching an enticing career for young people as well as mid-life career changers.
